Our Mission
At MMS, our mission is: to educate and inspire. We are committed to providing equitable opportunities for people of all classes, backgrounds, and living circumstances to experience Minnesota’s rich mycological heritage.
Through education and outreach, we aim to deepen the public’s understanding of fungi and their vital role in our environment.
There are many things we do as part of this mission to serve our community
Study and Identification
With the guidance of professional mycologists, our members continuously improve their mushroom identification skills. We collaborate with NAMA to contribute to the scientific community, deepen our understanding of fungi, and share knowledge and experiences.
Collection and Preservation
We actively contribute to the mycological collection at the University of Minnesota, enriching the resources available for research and education. Our efforts help document the diverse fungal species found in Minnesota, ensuring their preservation for future generations.
Public Education and Outreach
Education is at the heart of our organization. We are passionate about sharing our knowledge with the public and raising awareness about the importance of fungi in our ecosystem. Through workshops, lectures, forays, educational programs, and public displays, we aim to inspire a deeper appreciation for mushrooms and their role in nature.
Collaborate with the Poison Control Center
As an organization, we train identifiers to assist the Minnesota Poison Control Center in identifying toxic mushrooms. This helps ensure public safety and prevent mushroom-related deaths in Minnesota. Our expertise contributes to the well-being of the people in our community and has even helped save lives of Minnesotans.
